YANCEYVILLE, N.C. -- A
13-year-old Dillard Middle School student has died after being pulled out of a
reservoir by a diving rescue team on Tuesday.
The Caswell County sheriff's office said Damien Farmer was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Danville Regional Medical Center. His body was taken to Roanoke, Va., for an autopsy.
Sheriff's officials said Farmer jumped into a reservoir located behind the Yanceyville Water Plant off of Badgett Sisters Parkway. Officers responded to a call at 5:15 p.m., and they attempted to locate the teen in the water.
Due to the water temperature and depth, the deputies could not locate Farmer. The Yanceyville Fire Department and Caswell E.M.S. continued the search until the Danville Rescue Dive Team arrived.
The dive team was able to find Farmer within minutes in about 24 feet of water. He was taken by ambulance to Danville Medical Center.
Sheriff's officials said an autopsy is standard operating procedure and no foul play is suspected. The case is still under investigation.
Dillard Middle School has set up grief counseling for students and staff.
