Inmate Dies After Jail Fight

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- An Alamance County jail inmate who was involved in a fight
on Friday has died in the hospital.
The Alamance County Sheriff's Office was notified at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday that Thomas Lumpkin Sr., 57, had died. The specific cause of his death has not been released.
On Friday, detention officers used a stun gun to break up a fight between Lumpkin and fellow inmate George Jones, 48, in a cell block at the Alamance County Detention Center. Investigators said Lumpkin was found to have a small cut on the back of his head, and he was initially taken to the center's medical section where he was treated and evaluated.
Lumpkin was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. Jail officials said he was alert and communicating with staff at that time.
Lumpkin was evaluated at ARMC and transferred to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The specifics of this evaluation have not been released.
The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation has been requested by the sheriff's office to take the lead in investigating Lumpkin's death. The Alamance County District Attorney has also been consulted.
